RAW Q is one of New York's foundational open-format selectors. He doesn't need a theme night â the records are the theme. On this April 24th set for ArthouseAM, he opens with Parliament's Mothership Connection from 1975 and spends the next two hours making the case that hip-hop and funk were always the same conversation. Three De La Soul cuts, Gang Starr, Nas, Poor Righteous Teachers, Q-Tip, Pete Rock & CL Smooth â the canon, played by someone who helped shape it. Two interludes mark the turns: from hip-hop's golden era into the soul and disco underneath it all, then back again to close with Pete Rock and a Manzel space funk to take you home.
